GOULDSBORO, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a construction vehicle and an SUV on Route 1 in Gouldsboro.
Troopers responded to the crash at the intersection of Pond Road and Route 1 just before 4 p.m., Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Monday in a news release.
Early investigation suggests that the driver of a Jeep Patriot, a 25-year-old man from Tennessee, was traveling on Pond Road and reportedly rolled through a stop sign to take a left turn onto Route 1 when the construction vehicle, traveling east, struck the SUV and caused it to roll over, according to police.
Moss said the driver of the construction vehicle was not injured.
Three people were in the SUV at the time of the crash, police said, and all three had to be extricated and were brought to Ellsworth Hospital.
The 25-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger were then brought by LifeFlight to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with serious injuries, according to officials.
Another passenger in the SUV, a 23-year-old woman from Tennessee, was in the front seat at the time of the crash, officials said, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The driver of the Jeep was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.
The part of Route 1 where the crash occurred was shut down for several hours before re-opening to traffic, Moss said.
Ellsworth Police Department, Franklin, Sullivan, and Gouldsboro Fire Departments, Northern Light Ambulance, and MSP’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit assisted Maine State Police with the crash.
