Mainers struggle to find gas for generators amid widespread outages

"I have to run the generator full time or else the basement fills with water," one resident said.

TOPSHAM, Maine — As power outages persist across Maine, many residents are turning to generators to keep their homes warm amid freezing temperatures.

However, the increased demand for gasoline to fuel these generators became difficult when gas stations were closed Thursday, with some still closed Friday.

The issue has led to long lines at gas stations across the state.

"I had to go all the way to West Bath to get gas because everything was closed," John Milkowski of Topsham said.

Tony Pierce echoed Milkowski's sentiments, emphasizing the financial strain of relying on gasoline to produce electricity.

"I was telling my kids this morning we are making electricity with gasoline, [so] it costs a lot of money," he said.

For many, refilling gas cans has become a regular and costly chore.

"Today there is gas available. I had 14 gallons yesterday that I went through between yesterday and today, and I ran out again this morning, so here I am," Milkowski said.

Brunswick resident Ben Duffy highlighted the necessity of continuous generator usage to prevent bigger issues.

"I have to run the generator full time or else the basement fills with water," he said.

Until power is restored, these challenges persist for many residents.

For those planning to refill their gas tanks tonight, expect lengthy waits, as filling multiple gas cans takes time.
