CLINTON, Maine — The Clinton Police Department used Maine's "yellow flag law" Sunday night following a 911 call from a man reportedly threatening to use a shotgun on himself.

Around 5:45 p.m., Waterville Regional Communications Center received a 911 call from Tardiff Road and reported a 42-year-old man "threatening self-harm with a shotgun," according to a Tuesday press release from Clinton PD.

While officers were en route to the man's house, his wife and sister were able to get the shotgun away from him before he allegedly fled into nearby woods, the release stated.

Upon arrival, officers began searching for the individual.

"While searching the area, officers learned the male had been located on Flood Farm property by a member of the Flood family," the release stated.

Police said they responded to the farm, where they found the man and safely took him into custody without further incident.

Following protocol, the man was placed in protective custody and then taken to a local hospital for evaluation, according to the release.

Clinton Police Department's Sergeant Smith, Chief Rusty Bell, and Officer Jerico Champagne responded to the call on Sunday.

Officer Champagne is trained in Maine's new yellow flag laws and "ensured all required paperwork was completed, leading to the seizure of the male's firearms," the release stated.

"Out of respect for privacy and the sensitive nature of mental health concerns, the male's identity will not be released," police said.

No criminal charges are pending at this time.

The Fairfield Police Department also assisted at the scene.
