NEW BRUNSWICK, Canada — A man from Maine has been charged in connection with a death investigation in New Brunswick.
According to a news release from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, 47-year-old Keith Martin was charged with second degree murder in connection with the death of 48-year-old Mark Mitchell of Esgenoopetitj First Nation in New Brunswick.
Just before 4 p.m. on Thursday, an alert was issued asking residents in the Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation area to stay inside and lock their doors after a 48-year-old man was found dead and another man injured following a gun-related incident, according to police.
People were asked to avoid the area.
Police began searching for a 47-year-old man from Maine who was believed to be carrying a gun "with dangerous intent" in the area, and had been seen on Diggle Point Road at the time of the alert.
The alert ended just before 1:15 p.m. on Friday. Police said at that time, the man was still at large. A little more than an hour later, police said they arrested the suspect.
Martin appeared in Miramichi Provincial Court on Sept. 7 and returned to custody, police said. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Sept. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
