Truck hits traffic stopped for roadwork in Bethel causing chain-reaction crash

The road was reduced to a single lane, and workers with the Maine Department of Transportation had signs directing traffic.

BETHEL, Maine — Several people were injured in a chain-reaction crash shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday in Bethel.

A woman from South Paris driving a Jeep was stopped on Walkers Mills Road per the instructions of Maine Department of Transportation worker, who held a sign directing traffic as roadwork reduced travel to one lane, according to a news release from the Oxford County Sheriff's Office.

Two other vehicles were stopped behind the Jeep a Toyota Camry driving by a man from Connecticut and a Honda Pilot driving by a woman from Westbrook behind him.

The Honda Pilot was rear-ended by a pickup truck driving by a woman from Bethel, which caused a chain-reaction crash that damaged all four vehicles.

Four people were injured, and several were brought by ambulance to nearby hospitals to be treated. Their injuries, however, were not considered life-threatening, according to the release.

No workers with MDOT were injured, and signs to alert drivers about road work and single-lane traffic were made visible "on approach to the scene," officials said.

The crash remains under investigation, and charges are possible.
