Police investigate cannonball munition turned in by Yarmouth resident

A resident turned in the old cannonball with other unwanted ammunition to police on Monday.

YARMOUTH, Maine — The Yarmouth Police Department assisted a resident who wanted to turn in unwanted ammunition including an old cannonball on Monday.

Authorities were concerned the cannonball could be live and requested assistance from police in Portland.

The Portland Police Department's Hazardous Devices Unit advised it was "possibly a live munition," and immediately responded to assist, Yarmouth police said Tuesday on social media.

Following examination by the hazardous devices unit as well as a member of the Maine State Police Bomb Squad, the device was "rendered safe and determined to have been a live/active munition," according to the post.

"YPD would like to remind our citizens if they come across old military style munitions, to leave them in place and notify the police department immediately," the post stated.

Yarmouth Fire Rescue and Yarmouth Public Works also assisted with the incident.
