Lifeguard chairs in Kennebunk damaged in apparent vandalism 'unsafe' for use

Lifeguards are having to watch from the seawall instead of the now "unsafe" elevated platforms, which puts the public at a higher risk.

KENNEBUNK, Maine — Officials in Kennebunk are investigating after two lifeguard chairs were recently damaged in a vandalism incident, resulting in a public safety issue for beachgoers. 

Kennebunk Fire-Rescue posted on social media Saturday morning saying two lifeguard chairs had been "damaged to the point that they are unsafe" for use overnight. Lifeguards are now having to sit and guard from the seawall instead of the elevated platforms. 

The elevated lifeguard chairs serve to increase visibility—without them, it "puts the public at higher risk," according to Kennebunk Fire-Rescue. 

In a comment, Kennebunk Fire-Rescue noted costs to address the damaged chairs will ultimately fall upon taxpayers. 

Those with information regarding the overnight vandalism incident are asked to contact the Kennebunk Police Department
