Lewiston police investigate after one person injured in shooting incident

One person suffered a serious gunshot wound and was brought to Central Maine Medical Center, police said.

LEWISTON, Maine — Police are searching for suspects who were reported to have fled the scene of a shooting incident in Lewiston that left one person in "critical condition" Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 3 p.m., Lewiston police officers responded to the intersection of Walnut and Pierce Streets for a report of several shots fired, according to a Facebook post from the Lewiston Police Department.

Police that were in the area heard the shots and "were on scene within seconds," the department said.

Witnesses to the incident reported those involved fled the scene after the shooting. Police said one male individual was found and brought to Central Maine Medical Center and is in "critical condition."

Police are still searching for additional suspects and are working to gather evidence in the area, according to police.

NEWS CENTER Maine sent a crew to the scene who reported Pine Street was blocked off from Blake Street to Pierce Street around 4 p.m. At approximately 5 p.m., Walnut Street had reopened.

Multiple police cruisers were observed by the NEWS CENTER Maine crew at the scene and officers were seen looking in yards on both sides of the street.

Those with information are asked to call the Lewiston Police Department at 207-513-3001 ext. 3324.

Lewiston Public Schools Superintendent Jake Langlais said in a community letter Longley Elementary School and the Dingley Building sheltered-in-place due to the incident nearby. Some bus routes were also delayed.

"We were in contact with law enforcement and no other schools needed to take action. We commend the staff for communicating and taking appropriate steps," Langlais said.

Lewiston Public Schools staff were able to work with police to create a safe environment for those heading home from afterschool programs, according to Langlais.
