Lewiston opens an overnight warming center for youth

New Beginnings is providing support for young adults ages 18-24 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

LEWISTON, Maine — Across the state, overnight warming centers are witnessing an influx of individuals seeking refuge as temperatures continue to plummet.

In Lewiston, a dedicated warming center has been established to address the needs of a particularly vulnerable age group – young adults aged 18 to 24.

New Beginnings has taken a proactive approach to ensure the well-being of those who are unhoused.

"When we see young adults mixed with older adults in shelter situations, there is often conflict or young people getting drawn into behaviors and activities they normally wouldn't be drawn into. We have heard from young adults that they don't like going to adult shelters because it's scary for them," New Beginnings Executive Director Chris Bicknell said.

Since its opening in December, the warming center has already served 37 different young adults with around 10 individuals who return nightly.

New Beginnings also operates a 24-hour emergency shelter for individuals under 20 years old, further expanding its outreach efforts.

The funding for this initiative comes from a MaineHousing grant of $245,000.

This financial support covers staffing, security, and essential supplies for each person, including a bin for belongings, a blanket, a pillow, and warm meals.

Despite the positive impact, Bicknell acknowledges initial hesitation from the police and fire departments due to past issues with a similar shelter.

"Some of the things we heard were there were lots of calls for service at night for behavior, people using substances, as well as during the day when it was closed, people were hanging around the shelter and not leaving the community," Bicknell said.

To address these concerns, the warming center is staffed with professionals, and security is present at all times. In the morning, transportation is provided to Trinity Jubilee, a day center for adults.

In response to concerns, Lewiston Fire Chief Mark Caron asserts, "The Lewiston Fire Department has not received any complaints or calls for service at the New Beginnings warming center since it has opened."

The New Beginnings warming center plays a crucial role in supporting young adults during the harsh winter months.

The warming center will remain open nightly from now until March, providing essential warmth and support to vulnerable individuals in the community.
