BANGOR, Maine — Halloween is here, and despite the mass shooting in Lewiston last week, many families said they still plan to celebrate and take their children trick or treating.
Sgt. Jason McAmbley, spokesperson for Bangor Police Department, said although he doesn't have any heightened concerns, safety is at the forefront of his mind this year much like every year in the past.
McAmbley said because of the unexpected violence last week, Bangor police officers will be extremely visible, making sure the community feels safe.
A section of Maple Street will be blocked off so trick-or-treaters can walk safely as they rack up on candy, McAmbley said.
He said there will be extra police staffing in areas like Bangor Gardens and Little City, where McAmbley said people come from all over for Halloween every year.
Hampden public safety representatives said police there will be monitoring certain areas, too. The neighborhood of Constitution, Freedom, Liberty, and Independence Avenue will all be closed off to local traffic as well, representatives said.
Representatives at Hampden public safety said police officers will be stationed at the intersection of Constitution and Western Avenue.
McAmbley said families participating in Halloween activities tonight should pay attention and be self-aware.
"Watch out for all the kids, because the kids don't really care about the traffic. They care about the candy," McAmbley said. "That's the important thing to them, and they're going to be darting out and about in the streets. So, it's best that you go slow when you're going through these neighborhoods or park and walk."
McAmbley said trick-or-treaters should also look out for drivers who may not be paying attention.
"The people that are out walking, be careful because not everybody is paying attention to what they're supposed to be paying attention to," he said.
McAmbley said trick-or-treaters can also take a flashlight, and he suggests people wear reflectors on their costumes.
