GREAT POND, Maine — An investigation is underway after two people were found dead while crews Monday morning responded to a house fire in the Hancock County town of Great Pond.
The Aurora Fire Department responded around 5 a.m. to a residential fire on Old Dam Way, where two bodies were found, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lt. Aaron Turcotte said in a news release.
Aurora fire officials notified the state fire marshal's office after an early investigation suggested their deaths were caused by the fire, according to the release.
The fire marshal's office is investigating to determine the cause of the fire as well as the cause of death, with aid from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North, the release stated.
Both bodies were sent to the chief medical examiner's office where autopsies were completed, according to an update Tuesday from Turcotte. Additional testing is needed to determine their cause and manner of death.
The identities of the individuals who died have not yet been confirmed and will need DNA analysis, Turcotte added.
