GARDINER, Maine — Gardiner Area High School went into a lockdown and then a lockout on Friday due to a loud noise that was heard outside, which turned out to be a blown transformer.
The school returned to normal operations after law enforcement officials determined the noise that was heard was due to a transformer that blew near the school, Superintendent Patricia Hopkins told NEWS CENTER Maine.
A lockdown means students and staff are asked to remain in classrooms as officials determine the building and grounds are safe and clear. A lockout means students and staff can move throughout the building freely, but nobody can leave or enter the building.
