BREWER, Maine — Brewer Fire Department spent time with students at the Brewer Community School on Thursday and Friday as a part of the efforts driven by Fire Prevention Week.
"It's always a good time when you can come educate kids and make them understand what we do and make them not be afraid of us, see all the smiles on their face, make their day," Brewer firefighter Carter Merrill said.
Brewer Community School students were able to see firefighters dress in their full gear, including air tank, breathing apparatus, and helmet.
"Pay attention to smoke detectors, and if you are in the case of an emergency and you find yourself lost, don't move and don't be afraid. We will come find you," Merrill said.
Firefighters showed students a residential smoke detector and made sure they knew the proper functions of the potentially life-saving device.
"They love the opportunity to learn and work with the fire department, and it's been a great experience for our kids to learn about fire safety," Scott Hatch, teacher at the Brewer Community School, said.
Teachers were on board with Brewer firefighters' efforts to teach fire safety.
"We've been practicing what to do if your clothes catch on fire, and now they know how to stop, drop, and roll," Olivia Potter, teacher at the Brewer Community School. said.
Students were allowed to ask questions to firefighters not pertaining to emergency situations. One question posed had to do with what happens when a fire truck gets a flat tire.
"We would just call our highway department, and they would come bring the truck up to public works, and they would change it there," they responded.
