One person drowns after ATV crashes through ice on Hancock County lake

The identity of the person who drowned has not yet been released.

HANCOCK COUNTY, Maine — One person died Friday after the side-by-side ATV they were operating crashed through ice on a lake in Hancock County. 

Sgt. Josh Beal of the Maine Warden Service confirmed with NEWS CENTER Maine that a passenger riding on the ATV died of apparent drowning. 

The incident happened on Spring River Lake in Township 10, located north of Route 182 and near Tunk Mountain. 

Beal said that immediate family had been notified, but the identity of the person who drowned has not yet been released to the public. 

The person's identity and details about the incident were released Saturday morning.

Spring River Lake spans just over 700 acres and has a maximum depth of about 28 feet, according to a report through the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife website.
