Suspect in custody after Rumford shooting incident, shelter-in-place

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, officers located the suspect, who was suffering from a life-threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

RUMFORD, Maine — One person is in custody after Rumford police advised residents to shelter in place Tuesday evening due to an active shooter incident.

Around 8 p.m. Tuesday, Rumford police responded to Route 232, between East Bethel Road and South Rumford Road, for reports of an active shooter, the department said Wednesday in a press release.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed that an armed individual had fired multiple shots in the area, according to the release. The suspect also crashed his vehicle into a home at 61 State Route 232, allegedly set the home on fire, and proceeded to fire additional rounds into the home before leaving the scene on foot, the release stated.

Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, officers located the suspect, who was suffering from a life-threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. The suspect was taken to Rumford Hospital and later transferred to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

Nobody else was injured in the incident, and the shelter-in-place order has been lifted. 

Route 232 is back open to traffic. Police said investigators would remain at the scene Wednesday.

The Maine State Police Tactical Team was activated to assist Rumford police during the incident, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss told NEWS CENTER Maine.

Rumford police said additional information would be provided Wednesday.
