RAYMOND, Maine — Three people died in a head-on crash Wednesday in Cumberland County.
It happened around 11 a.m. on Egypt Road, near the Raymond-Gray town line, Lt. Jim Estabrook of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office told NEWS CENTER Maine.
Two vehicles and three people were involved: a black 2021 Nissan Frontier pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Gregory Logue of Windham and a blue 2021 Subaru Crosstrek SUV driven by 80-year-old Tamara Harmon of Raymond with passenger Arthur Harmon, 80, of Raymond. All three people died in the crash.
There were early indications that the pickup truck was acting erratically, crossed into the other lane, and struck the Subaru head-on, the release stated. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstruction Unit with assistance from the Criminal Investigation Division.
Estabrook described Egypt Road as curvy and difficult to navigate. He said the area where the crash happened is a wooded area near the Morgan Meadow hiking trail.
"Egypt Road is a very curvy road; it's a two-lane road. There's not great shoulders, it's not lighted, there's no street lights," Estabrook said. "When the weather gets worse we have a lot of slide offs... it's a bad road."
A resident of Egypt Road who spoke with NEWS CENTER Maine described the road as "windy" and that it is commonly used as a shortcut by locals to get between the towns of Gray and Raymond.
Egypt Road was closed for about three hours Wednesday during the emergency response. The road reopened shortly before 2:30 p.m.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigating agency and is working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
