RAYMOND, Maine — Three people died in a head-on crash in Cumberland County on Wednesday.
It happened around 11 a.m. on Egypt Road, near the Raymond-Gray town line, Lt. Jim Estabrook of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office told NEWS CENTER Maine.
Two vehicles were involved: a Nissan Frontier pickup truck and Subaru Crosstrek. There was one person in the truck and two people in the car, none of whom survived, according to officials.
Estabrook said there were early indications that the pickup truck was acting erratically, adding it was clear from the scene that it was a head-on crash and the pickup truck crossed the center line. However, officials are still investigating why that happened.
Estabrook described Egypt Road as curvy and difficult to navigate. He said the area where the crash happened is a wooded area near the Morgan Meadow hiking trail.
"It's a bad road," Estabrook said, adding officials are working to notify family members.
As of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, officials were still working to reconstruct the crash and did not have an estimate for when the road would reopen. Officials said drivers in the area should seek a different route.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigating agency and is working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
