Dump truck and SUV collide in Topsham, sending one to hospital

The crash happened early Wednesday morning on Route 196 near the Topsham/Lisbon line.

TOPSHAM, Maine — The driver of a dump truck was brought to a local hospital to be treated for injuries resulting from a head-on collision with a Cadillac SUV on Route 196 in Topsham. 

The Topsham Police Department responded to the crash along the Topsham/Lisbon town line around 7:40 a.m. Wednesday.  

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a red 2020 Western Star dump truck on its side after it left the roadway and a 2008 Cadillac SRX on its side and still in the roadway, Topsham police said in a news release. 

The driver of the dump truck, a 52-year-old man from Greene, was brought to Central Maine Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening. 

Police said the two people in the SUV at the time of the crash, a 28-year-old man from Casco who was driving the vehicle and a 64-year-old passenger from Lewiston, both denied medical injury or transport.

Witnesses told police the SUV, which was traveling eastbound, crossed into the path of the dump truck, traveling westbound, moments before they collided. 

Route 196 was closed for 30 to 45 minutes while the vehicles and debris were removed from the roadway. The crash remains under investigation.

Topsham Fire and Rescue, the Lisbon Police Department, and Maine State Police also responded to the scene.
