HARPSWELL, Maine — A man from Harpswell was seriously injured after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a tree Monday morning.

Cumberland County Sheriff's Office deputies and Harpswell Neck Fire Department personnel responded to the single-vehicle crash along Harpswell Neck Road, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

An investigation revealed 76-year-old Jeffrey Berkowitz of Harpswell was driving a 2006 Ashton Martin and had apparently fallen asleep. The vehicle went off the road and struck a tree head-on, the sheriff's office said in the release.

Berkowitz was reportedly brought to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
