CARMEL, Maine — A man from Dexter is facing multiple charges after allegedly wielding an ax in a standoff with Penobscot County deputies Monday in Carmel.

Penobscot County sheriff's deputies responded around 4:30 p.m. to Five Road for a reported family fight where a family member who was served a criminal trespass notice for the property had arrived and was threatening to forcefully enter the home, according to a news release from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.

The family member with the criminal trespass notice was identified as 44-year-old Eugene Woodard of Dexter.

"Woodward was making threats to the family member that he would break the door down to gain entry if not allowed into the residence which the victim had locked," the sheriff's office said in the release.

Woodard, who had armed himself with an ax and large knife, reportedly refused to follow commands to drop his weapons when law enforcement arrived at the scene.

"Woodard was making comments that he would have to be shot before leaving his property and that he was ready for a fight," according to the sheriff's office.

A deputy with prior interactions and a "good rapport" with Woodard was called and a perimeter was established. Woodard surrendered but became combative when deputies attempted to bring him to jail, the sheriff's office said.

Woodard was brought to the Penobscot County Jail and faces criminal trespass and refusing to submit to arrest or detention charges.
