Crews respond to structure fire in Scarborough during height of storm surge

"Firefighters were forced to navigate almost waist deep water from the storm surge to make access to the fire," according to the Scarborough Fire Department.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine β€” Crews in Scarborough responded to a structure fire on Saturday while a record-breaking storm swept across the state.

At approximately 12:32 p.m., the Scarborough Fire Department responded to 10 Smithers Way for a reported structure fire after a Scarborough police officer assigned to the Prout's Neck area noticed heavy smoke, according to a news release from the department.

Heavy fire originating from an unattached two-story garage was found upon crews' arrival.

Due to storm conditions, "Firefighters were forced to navigate almost waist deep water from the storm surge to make access to the fire," according to the release.

The fire was mostly contained to the garage, but the residential space on the second floor was damaged by smoke and water, the fire department said. The fire did not reportedly spread to a residential property approximately 15 feet away from the garage.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Scarborough Fire Department.

More than 10 roads were closed in Scarborough due to storm conditions Saturday, and many crews were forced to take alternate routes to get to the scene of the fire, the department said. The Scarborough Fire Department credits increased staffing in preparation for Saturday's storm with helping to minimize fire damage.

Portland, South Portland, and Cape Elizabeth Fire Departments reportedly assisted at the scene, along with Central Maine Power.
