Child struck in crosswalk in front of Auburn school; Lewiston driver charged

Auburn police were called to the area in front of Fairview School around 8:30 Tuesday morning.

AUBURN, Maine — A child was sent to a hospital Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to use a crosswalk in front of Fairview School in Auburn.

The Auburn Police Department said on social media officers were called to Minot Avenue in front of Fairview School around 8:30 a.m. for the crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian.

Police said a seven-year-old male was trying to cross Minot Avenue by using a marked crosswalk. A crossing guard had "stepped out to stop traffic, holding a stop sign equipped with flashing LED lights," according to police.

Alberto Nafoia, 29, of Lewiston was driving a 2019 Dodge Caravan west on Minot Avenue in the school zone and failed to see the crossing guard stopping traffic, striking the child, Auburn police said.

The child suffered "minor injuries" and was treated on scene. He was brought to Central Maine Medical Center for further evaluation, police said.

Nafoia was reportedly charged with driving to endanger and received a citation for operator failing to obey crossing guard.
