Toddler suffers gunshot wound in left hand, Sanford police say

The 3-year-old boy was brought to Maine Medical Center to be treated. He underwent surgery, and his injury is not considered life-threatening, police said.

SANFORD, Maine — A toddler is recovering after police say he suffered a gunshot injury to his hand during an incident Tuesday afternoon at a home in Sanford.

Emergency officials were notified shortly before 4:30 p.m. about possible gunshots heard on Shaw Road, the Sanford Police Department said in a news release.

When police and emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found the 3-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his left hand, according to the release.

The boy was accompanied by his father at the time of the incident and was brought to Maine Medical Center for treatment, according to the release.

Police said they recovered a pistol at the residence, though they did not specify whether it was the gun involved in the incident.

The boy underwent surgery Tuesday night, and his injury is not considered life-threatening, police said in an update Wednesday.

Sanford Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division is handling the investigation of the incident, and no charges were filed as of Wednesday afternoon.

Sanford police Maj. Matthew Gagne told NEWS CENTER Maine Wednesday that a search warrant was executed at the residence Tuesday night where the incident occurred, but no additional information is being shared at this time.

"This case is still in the early stages of the investigation, and the public is not at any risk," the release stated.
