Fire marshal's office determines cause of fatal fire at apartment building in Old Town

A 71-year-old man died from his injuries after a fire at a Stillwater Avenue apartment building Sunday morning.

OLD TOWN, Maine — The state fire marshal's office has determined the cause of a fire in Old Town Sunday where one man died from his injuries.

Crews responded to a fire located in an upstairs unit of an apartment building on Stillwater Avenue in Old Town just after 5 a.m., according to officials. One woman reportedly made it out safely by rappelling down the building by using an extension cord, but Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said 71-year-old Banton Foster reportedly died from life-threatening injuries after he was brought to a hospital.

Moss said in a news release Monday the fire marshal's office determined the cause of the fire as "improper disposal of smoking material," and it was ruled accidental.

No further information has been released at this time.
