Camden police investigate crash that killed pedestrian in a wheelchair

The woman died after being struck by a van Wednesday morning, town officials said.

CAMDEN, Maine — The Campden Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in a wheelchair and a van on Wednesday morning.

Police were dispatched to the crash around 8:19 a.m. on John Street Wednesday, according to a release from the town of Camden.

Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley said the woman hit was in her 60s and lived on John Street.

"The pedestrian was riding her motorized wheelchair along the eastbound side of the road. She was killed when the driver of the minivan who was heading east on John Street hit her with the passenger side of the vehicle," the release stated.

Maine State Police and Camden police are currently investigating and reconstructing the crash.

The name of the woman who died has not been released pending family notification.

Crews from Camden Fire and Rescue and North East Mobile Health Service performed life-saving measures for 40 minutes, but the woman died at the scene, according to the release.
