TOPSHAM, Maine — After excess rain from Monday's storm, drivers were met with detours Tuesday as the Maine Department of Transportation shut down the Frank J. Wood Bridge, which links the towns of Brunswick and Topsham.
Officials said the bridge would be closed for the next 24 hours, or until the water subsides. As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, the bridge remained closed.
"Our view from our house is, the fields... 400 acres of pasture, it's all flooded," Topsham resident Wayne Zazeski said, who was at the bridge to see just how high the water was. "It's tremendous now. And to just see this in action, it's awesome."
With the bridge being the connection for the area across the Androscoggin River, detours were labeled for oncoming vehicles to take.
"If you're down there, you can see it's almost touching the bridge at this point," Topsham Police Chief Mark Hagan said.
Hagan says while the town had a handful of power outages Monday, cleanup for the rest of Tuesday was fairly smooth.
It's a different story for the town of Brunswick. Fire Chief Kenneth Brilliant told NEWS CENTER Maine over the phone that crews are still working to help clean up downed telephone poles and trees scattered in town.
"You know, typical precautions. If [people] don't need to go out, there are still power crews out there [people] can go slow," Hagan added.
