BERWICK, Maine — Following a water advisory last Thursday and previously running out of bottled water for residents, the town of Berwick announced on social media Tuesday afternoon that a new shipment of 16-ounce bottles would be available starting Wednesday at the town hall.
Because of a limited supply, town officials ask that residents adhere to the 20-bottle maximum.
The water is being provided to residents after Maine Water issued a health advisory on July 25 citing high levels of manganese, resulting from the dry summer weather. They also stated that the water may be discolored.
Officials warned that children up to six months and women who may be pregnant not to drink the water, but healthy adults could brush their teeth, bathe, cook, use ice, and wash dishes.
"The manganese level in our latest sample taken is .31 mg/L. A health advisory is required when levels reach .30 mg/L," the Town of Berwick website explained.
Maine Water said on its website that they are flushing water in the distribution system and water treatment is ongoing.
Chief Plant Operator Joe Dignam of the Maine Water Company spoke on YouTube about the situation.
Maine Water will send out an update when there is more water to pick up. Information will also be posted on www.berwickmaine.org and the town’s media channels.
