BANGOR, Maine — The Bangor School Department is warning the public of a recent scam involving fraudulent checks that claim to have been issued by the school department.

On Monday, the Bangor School Department said in a news release the department has been made aware of illegitimate checks falsely claiming to have been sent out by the school department.

The checks reportedly target people who use online marketplaces.

"The checks may be accompanied by a request to give funds over the agreed amount of sale to a mover who comes to pick up the item," the Bangor School Department said.

The public is warned against cashing or depositing the checks as doing so "may result in financial loss for the recipient." Those who may have provided goods or services after receiving a fraudulent check are asked to report it with local law enforcement.

The Bangor School Department is working with law enforcement while they investigate.
