PORTLAND, Maine — Harbor View Memorial Park in Portland is infested with rats.
Louise Davis' apartment is behind the park.
"I've seen probably about 15 [rats]," Davis told NEWS CENTER Maine. "Some of them are regular rat size and some of them are bigger than that."
Tuesday afternoon, dozens of the furry creatures could be seen digging through trash in the park, leftover from the previous homeless encampment, which was cleared a week ago.
"They do damage, they eat food, they leave germs, they can bite," Henry Jova said, who also lives behind the park. "I hope it's taken care of fairly soon."
The city of Portland says it is working to get rid of the rats.
"Our Parks, Rec, and Facilities department is deploying an exterminator to place rat traps on City property at Harbor View Memorial Park as we are aware of activity there," according to city spokesperson Jessica Grondin.
