PORTLAND, Maine — Portland Mayor Kate Snyder said Monday she would not seek re-election in November 2023.
Snyder wrote in an email to fellow city councilors and staff that she was making her plans public more than a year in advance before speaking publicly about upcoming ballot questions.
Snyder has spoken against a recommendation by the city's Charter Commission to create an executive mayor position.
On Nov. 8, Portland voters will decide on that recommendation, along with seven other ballot questions.
"While these past nearly three years have been unrelentingly challenging because of so many unforeseeable factors, I have worked to be as steady as I can be; focused on the voter-approved stated responsibilities of the position of Mayor," Snyder wrote, in part. "I have been, and remain fully committed to my role and responsibilities, and to our shared work as public servants."
