PORTLAND, Maine — We have an update on a story we brought you in July about a Portland man who has been fighting to keep his childhood home.
Darryl Crabtree, 60, has cognitive challenges and helped take care of his elderly parents for years in their home on Maine Avenue until they both passed away.
In May, he was notified he would be evicted unless he bought out other family members.
A GoFundMe has raised more than $30,000.
Darryl has also secured a loan, but it may not be enough to buy the home, especially at the current market value.
"It's their house, not mine, even if I buy it out. It's their house. I am just the caretaker," Darryl said.
Community members, from neighbors to strangers on the internet, have been pulling together and chipping in to help support him in his effort to keep the home.
"If we can keep getting the word out and get him further along, then everyone reaches their goal, and he gets to stay in his home," Alicia Menard, Darryl's neighbor, explained.
A hearing on the eviction issue is scheduled for next Thursday in Portland.
