Naples man charged with murder in connection with Portland shooting

Four people were brought to the hospital in connection with the shooting July 30 on Forest Avenue, and one of those four people died from her injuries.

PORTLAND, Maine — A man from Naples has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting on Forest Avenue.

Portland police took Aaron Karp, 47, into custody Thursday. He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail with no bail, police said Friday in a press release.

His first court appearance was on Friday.

Karp's attorney, Verne Paradie, said Karp turned himself into police Thursday evening after learning of a warrant police filed for Karp's arrest earlier in the day.

"Mr. Karp did not run. He was not wanted or had any warrant for him until yesterday, and he voluntarily turned himself into the police yesterday," Paradie said Friday. "We certainly are looking forward to having a trial and getting our day in court."

Paradie also noted to the media that Karp is the owner of Almost Famous Tattoo and Piercing, located a block away from where the July 30 shooting occurred.

Karp's next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 23.

At 8:45 p.m. on July 30, Portland police responded to the 1110 block of Forest Avenue—an area called Morrills Corner—for a report of a shooting. Four people were injured and taken to Maine Medical Center.

One of those people, 54-year-old Susan McHugh of Gray, died from her injuries.

The other three people who were injured — a 45-year-old man from New Hampshire, a 48-year-old man from Yarmouth, and a 51-year-old man from Gray — were treated for their injuries and have since been released from the hospital.

“This is just the beginning, as we will continue to work with the Office of the Maine Attorney General to build our case as we look for justice for Ms. McHugh,” Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois said in Friday's release.

Police have not made any other arrests. The investigation remains active, according to the release.

Dubois acknowledged frustrations members of the public may have been feeling about the amount of information that has been released about the case.

"As I’ve mentioned before, our top priority in every case is to make sure the individuals responsible are brought to justice. At times, this includes not providing details to the public that some may seem benign, but in the reality of the case, are very much not benign," he said. "We appreciate everyone’s understanding when it comes to this matter. I also want to thank all of the agencies that have assisted us at the scene that night as well as with the ensuing investigation.”

Investigators ask that anyone who may have information call them at 207-874-8575. People can also text keyword PPDME and your message to 847411.
