PORTLAND, Maine — A dog was rescued from a fire at a home in Portland Tuesday afternoon.
The Portland Fire Department said in a Facebook post multiple calls were received regarding a fire at a home on Washington Avenue at approximately 3:15 p.m.
Once crews arrived, a dog was removed from the second floor of the building after it was found unconscious, the fire department said. The dog regained consciousness within minutes of crews administering oxygen.
"Crews assisted the home owner with getting the dog into their car so they could transport it to the Veterinarian," according to the fire department.
Four cats did not survive the blaze, the fire department said in the post.
The blaze was reportedly placed under control just after 3:30 p.m. No one was home at the time of the fire.
A portion of Washington Avenue was closed Tuesday afternoon due to the fire. Portland police said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that the road was shut down from Rainbow Mall Road to Ocean Avenue.
In an update Tuesday night, Portland Fire Chief Sean Donaghue told NEWS CENTER Maine the cause of the fire was determined to be electrical. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, which resulted in a faster determination than usual, Donaghue said.
