PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) — A young man who collapsed in the street following a car crash Saturday died of a stab wound to the chest, police said Monday.
Patrick Lobor, 22, was driving one of three vehicles involved in the crash on Brighton Avenue.
Police said after the crash Lobor got out of his car, collapsed and died from a stab wound to the chest. They said they're confident there was no foul play and that the death did not appear to be suspicious, but would not say how Lobor ended up being stabbed. That was still being investigated.
Lobor, who worked at a hotel in South Portland, was a former standout athlete at Deering High School. His coach, Todd Wing said he had reached out to many players who were on the same team as Lobor.
"It’s basketball that brings us together, but it’s those relationships they build that last a lifetime," Wing said, "through good and bad."
Wing said Lobor was a talented basketball player and a great teammate.
"He was very quiet, soft-spoken, really epitomized that quiet strength," Wing said. "He was very well liked and respected by his teammates. Losing someone who had their whole life ahead of him is tragic."
Lobor's parents, Robert and Christina, have been surrounded by family and friends since Saturday.
The family has already experienced loss. Their first child died at the age of 1 in Sudan. And after coming to Portland as refugees in 2004, their son Richard Lobor was murdered in 2014 at an apartment on Brighton Avenue in Portland.
Now their son Patrick.
The Lobor house is filled with family photos. Also on display are numerous sports awards won by Lobor and his brothers. Coach Wing gave Lobor’s parents their son’s No. 33 basketball jersey from Deering High School.
Through tears Robert Lobor said his son was a very nice young man, hardworking and someone not looking for trouble.
"I love him very much, I love my son," he said. "What happened to him really broke my heart."
His mother Christina said she wished God would have taken her instead: "I miss my son, I miss him, really."
While we know the cause of Lobor’s death, the manner of death remains under investigation. Police are still looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have talked to Patrick Labor before the crash to contact the Portland PD at 207-874-8575.
