PORTLAND, Maine — Police are investigating after a body was discovered on fire at a campsite near Marginal Way in Portland early Sunday morning.
Just before 3:30 a.m., a Portland police officer who was patrolling in the area of Marginal Way discovered "what he thought was a campfire" located in the area of 140 Marginal Way and northbound lanes of Interstate 295, according to a news release from the Portland Police Department.
Upon further examination, the officer reportedly saw a tent in flames and what appeared to be a body inside.
"The fire department extinguished the fire and determined that the subject was deceased," police said.
The body was brought to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner for identification and to determine the cause of death. The state fire marshal's office, Portland Fire Department, and Portland police detectives are investigating the incident.
No further information has been released at this time.
