Bystanders credited for getting person to safety in Portland apartment fire

Portland fire officials credited "quick thinking" bystanders with helping one person get off the roof.

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland fire officials credit the "quick thinking bystanders" who helped rescue a person who escaped an apartment fire from a second-floor window and was stuck on the roof of the porch. 

Fire officials responded to a call at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday reporting visible smoke and flames and one person on the roof of an apartment building on Oxford Street. 

The bystanders apparently found a ladder nearby and were able to get the person off the porch roof before fire officials arrived, the Portland Fire Department said Sunday in a Facebook post.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the front of an apartment on the second floor and extinguished the blaze in about five minutes, the department said. 

One person was brought to Maine Medical Center for smoke inhalation. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
