Old Port hotels complain about noise levels

The Portland noise ordinance has a 92 decibel limit.
The Old Port business owners said that loud people and music is disruptive.

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Hotels in Portland's Old Port have requested that Portland City Council to reconsider just how much noise is allowed at bars and nightclubs. The request comes after a number of complaints from guests who said their stays in downtown Portland have been disrupted by loud music and loud people walking in the streets.

The General Manager of the Hyatt said his customers have been complaining to him and other business owners in the Old Port are agreeing that it's time to address this issue.

"Some business owners who have been here since before the bars started on this strip are starting to complain or express their challenges at this point. And I think that is a challenging environment for the whole, all of the downtown, restaurants, local shops and things like that. Because it is excessive sound," said Allen Saric.

The Portland noise ordinance has a 92 decibel limit. Boston has a 50 decibel limit between 11 p.m and 7 a.m.

The Portland Police Department and city's sound oversight committee will be reviewing the complaints and looking potential change to the sound ordinance in the coming weeks. The council will most likely take up the issue the first week in February.
