PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police arrested a New York man Monday morning following a traffic stop. The man is now facing nine charges.
A Portland officer reportedly noticed a vehicle failing to stop through "several blinking red lights" shortly after 2:30 a.m. The officer attempted to stop the sedan on Franklin Street near Fox Street but said the driver began pulling away, disregarding the activated lights and siren on the cruiser, according to a Monday news release from the Portland Police Department.
Police said the driver, 36-year-old Francis Olukogbon of Uniondale, New York, eventually pulled over on Everett Street.
Olukogbon would have been charged with driving to endanger and failure to stop for an officer, but police said the driver became "very combative" and fled the scene on foot, according to the release.
This led to a brief foot chase ending with Olukogbon being taken into custody "with great resistance" and brought to Cumberland County Jail.
Officials said the driver was also in possession of suspected cocaine HCL and methamphetamines.
"Olukogbon was charged with Driving to Endanger, Failure to Stop for an Officer, Assault on an Officer, Refusing to Submit to Arrests/Detention-Refusing to Stop, Refusing to Submit to Arrest or Detention-Physical Force, Refusing to Submit to Arrest or Detention-Bodily Injury, Unlawful Trafficking in Scheduled Drugs, Unlawful Possession of Scheduled Drug (W) and Falsifying Physical Evidence," the release stated.
