PORTLAND, Maine — Mark Dion was sworn in as mayor of Portland along with two new city councilors.
He took office Monday night as homelessness, affordable housing, and other challenges face the city.
"I stand here no stranger to the challenges facing the city," Dion said after taking office. "To that end, I look forward to my work on this council in partnership with each of you as I have as a district councilor so that together we can realize goals that will further the best interest and expectations of our constituents."
The new mayor went on to say the issues Portland faces can't be taken on by itself.
"The financial realities of immigration, housing, mental health, and substance use disorder cannot be solved without a shared leadership between our city and state government," Dion said. "Our taxpayers cannot afford to shoulder these human needs standing alone."
Kate Sykes was sworn in and took Dion's seat on the city council. Anna Bullett took office and filled former Councilor Andrew Zarro's seat.
"Portland's story is one of relentless optimism and I'm confident that under your stewardship, its best chapters have yet to be written," Zarro said. "Thank you, Portland, for the privilege of serving you."
Mayor Dion won a race with four other candidates, which included Zarro. Dion narrowly claimed victory after five rounds of ranked-choice voting.
