Man accused of breaking into Portland apartment and assaulting woman

PORTLAND, Maine — A man is facing charges after allegedly breaking into a woman's Portland apartment and assaulting her early Monday morning.

Shortly before 3:20 a.m. Monday, police responded to a report of an assault and home invasion at 723 Congress Street, the Portland Police Department said in a news release.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a 62-year-old woman who said someone had broken into her apartment and "severely beat her," the release stated.

After an extensive investigation, 53-year-old Stephen Brichetto was arrested and charged Monday with aggravated assault and burglary, police said.
