PORTLAND, Maine — A car crashed into a building in Portland shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The vehicle was traveling down Weymouth Street when it overshot a turn, hit a curb, and crashed into the brick foundation of a building at 5 Weymouth Street, Portland police spokesperson Brad Nadeau told NEWS CENTER Maine Monday.
Arriving crews found two people inside the vehicle that had struck the building, according to Portland Fire Department Division Chief Sean Donaghue. Significant damage was reportedly done to a load-bearing wall. Neither vehicle occupant was injured, Donaghue said.
Residents of the building were evacuated from the building due to structural concerns as the Portland Fire Department responded, Nadeau said. Grant Street was shut down while crews responded.
Additional crews were called to build intermediate shoring until repairs could be made to the building, Donaghue said. City of Portland Code Enforcement also responded to the scene.
The scene was reportedly cleared by 8 p.m. Sunday night.
As of Monday morning, no charges had been issued in connection with the crash, according to Nadeau.
