Portland Science Center doesn't sell enough tickets, forced to close

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) — After three years, The Portland Science Center, that brought traveling exhibits about pirates, the Titanic, the human body and sharks to Maine, is closing its doors.

The owner, Joe Gold tells NEWS CENTER Maine the center did not sell enough tickets. Gold did not give a date for the closure.

The science center opened in September of 2015 at 68 Commercial Street in Maine's largest city and featured traveling exhibits like The Titanic, that featured actual artifacts from the sunken ship.

As of Wednesday, May 16, The Portland Science Center's voicemail said that their recent shark exhibit had ended and they were now closed.

The Massachusetts-based owner of the center's building, The Gold Group, told the Portland Press Herald that the business is opting out of its lease.
