Bomb threats at six Maine schools force 'lockout'

The FBI assisted local police in investigating the threats, which were determined to be a hoax.

PORTLAND, Maine — Bomb threats were directed at six Portland schools Tuesday morning, according to police.

The threats, which were determined to be a hoax, were made at about 10 a.m. and targeted Ocean Avenue Elementary, Talbot Community School, Amanda Rowe Elementary, Peaks Island Elementary, Longfellow Elementary, and Deering High School, police said.

"Out of an abundance of caution, all schools in the district implemented a lockout, during which no one was able to enter or leave the school," Portland police said in a statement.

Police said the FBI assisted officers in investigating the threats.

"Portland Police officers conducted a walkthrough at each school and all were able to return to normal operations soon after for the remainder of the day," police said. "The PPD would like to thank Portland Public Schools for their assistance and cooperation with this investigation."
