Popular neighborhood market reopens in Wells, following a lengthy closure

Meserve's Market faced a daunting 45-day closure, necessitating extensive renovations after a ruinous storm on Dec. 18.

WELLS, Maine — Meserve's Market, a beloved neighborhood store in Wells, has triumphantly reopened its doors Tuesday after a challenging six-week closure following a destructive December storm.

The community has eagerly awaited the return of this local spot.

"Well, we're not quite ready, but we couldn't wait another day," Owner Bob Meserve, said.

Meserve's faced a daunting 45-day closure, necessitating extensive renovations, including new floors, ceilings, and lights.

The financial burden and uncertainties were daunting for the owners, "Dealing with the unknown. 'Is the money going to come in? How am I going to pay the contractors?' How is the insurance....there's a lot of unknowns," Meserve said.

Despite the challenges, the Meserves were overwhelmed with support from the community.

Opening day, exceeded expectations with neighbors showing up, some even bearing gifts.

"It feels like home when you come in here. You don't always get that around town these days, so it's very nice to see them be here and continue to be a part of the community," Matt Beatrice, a resident said.

Laurie Ross, a worker, added, "The first thing they say when they open the door is 'yay.' They are so excited we're open."

For Bob and Becky, Meserve's Market is not just a business — it's a vital part of the community.

"This morning, I put out balloons to let everyone know we are open. Four people beeped their horns and waved. It's just been amazing, no way to describe it; just fulfilled," Becky Meserve said.

One local said she was happy to get back to her weekend routine.

"Now we can have our cinnamon buns on Sundays again, and we're pretty pumped about it," resident Shelby Osgood said.
