RUMFORD, Maine — A Canton man was fatally shot by law enforcement officers in Rumford Monday night.
Sean B. Dyment, 23, was taken to Rumford Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a joint release Tuesday from Rumford police and the Oxford County Sheriff's Office.
Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Corporal Joshua Aylward and Deputy Matthew Steinort were the ones who fired their weapons, the release stated. Both have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Office of the Maine Attorney General, which is standard in these cases.
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday, Rumford police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office were interviewing a citizen in front of the Rumford Police Station at 150 River Street. The citizen was expressing concerns about being followed around town by an unfamiliar vehicle, according to officials.
During the interview, a vehicle matching the description drove up in front of the police station and Dyment allegedly confronted officers with a rifle, leading Aylward and Steinort to fire their weapons at him, the release stated.
Dyment was taken by Med-Care Ambulance to the hospital. He died around 8:45 p.m., officials said.
