POLAND, Maine — The state fire marshal's office is investigating a fire that destroyed the schoolhouse building at the former Elan School in Poland on Sunday morning.
It happened shortly before 5 a.m. at the vacant property on Number 5 Road, Poland Fire Chief Tom Printup told NEWS CENTER Maine.
No other buildings on the property were damaged in the fire, but flames did extend to some woods in the area.
Printup said there were no power lines connected to the building, and the investigation into the cause is being led by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Nobody was injured in the fire, and firefighters cleared the scene around 10 a.m., Printup said.
The Elan School was a boarding school for troubled youths that closed in 2011, citing financial problems and lack of enrollment. Former students allege staff subjected them to physical and emotional abuse.
