Piscataquis Regional YMCA to close this fall

The board of directors made the announcement Friday, citing increased costs for operations and declining revenue.

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The Piscataquis Regional YMCA in Dover-Foxcroft will be closing this fall, its board of directors announced Friday.

The permanent closure will happen no later than Nov. 1, YMCA officials said in a news release. The pool would be shutting down immediately following the announcement, and services would be ending over the coming weeks.

The board cited a decline in revenue and rising operational costs as key factors in their decision.

"After-effects of the pandemic, reduction in memberships, programming and declining public funds proved to be a combination of obstacles too great for the Piscataquis Regional YMCA to continue operations," the release read in part.

All memberships and programming will be prorated and refunded, and membership dues will not be drafted on or after Nov. 1, according to the release. Memberships will be honored at the Old Town-Orono YMCA.

Members are encouraged to explore and seek out other wellness facilities in the area.

"We would like to thank all our members, donors, and employees for their devoted sponsorship of the YMCA over the years," the release stated. "We thank the great communities that we have serviced since 1988."
