Maine agencies to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Mainers can drop off expired or unwanted prescription drugs at locations around the state on Saturday, Oct. 26.

PORTLAND, Maine — National Drug Take Back Day is a semi-annual event hosted by the Drug Enforcement Agency that gives people the chance to safely dispose of prescription drugs they no longer need. This year, it's being held on Saturday, Oct. 26.

According to the DEA, the day is meant to cut down on the number of accidental overdoses and educate the public on the potential to abuse prescription drugs.

In April of this year, the DEA reported they had collected 670,136 pounds of unwanted medication nationwide. That's 335 tons.

Multiple law enforcement offices in Maine are planning to take part in the event, with drop off locations expected to open across the state.

Participating agencies will be accepting any prescription medications you may have with few exceptions. Namely, they ask that people not bring any needles, electronic devices, or items containing mercury.

According to the Auburn Police Department, the prescription drugs will be accepted with no questions asked.

"The goal is to collect these things and get them out of circulation in a safe way," Auburn Deputy Chief Timothy Cougle said.
