MaineGeneral Health exceeds 2024 fundraising goal at Walk of Hope

The Walk of Hope was part of their Day of Hope events. All proceeds raised Saturday will support expansion plans at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care.

AUGUSTA, Maine — When dealing with a cancer diagnosis, having someone by your side can mean the world. It's something Heather Moore understands on a personal level.

"My sister, 23 years ago, died of breast cancer at the age of 35," Moore said. "Now I'm helping other people like me, and I am in remission."

That's part of what motivated Moore to lead hundreds Saturday at this year's MaineGeneral Health's Day of Hope celebration at the Augusta Civic Center and Walk of Hope to uplift those going through treatment and fundraise for a new wing at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care.

Attendees raised more than $200,000 for the cause, exceeding their fundraising goals.

The demand for care has more than doubled since the center opened just over a decade ago but plans for a new wing will give staff the ability to meet those needs.

"A cancer diagnosis should never be done alone," Debbie Bowden, administrative director, said. "[The addition will] help us to be more efficient [and] increase access to care to treat the whole person."

Attendees were also able to speak with educators about health screenings and cancer treatments, take part in a healthy cooking demonstration, and share inspirational quotes on a writing wall.

Attendee Cathy Beaudoin said she is recovering from surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer found during an annual mammogram. She said seeing the more than 1,000 people show up to support cancer treatment was inspiring.

"The Alfond Center is amazing. I've been there. Everyone there is incredible," Beaudoin said. "No matter what, I'm going to keep going, and then I'm going to support other people because there's just way too much cancer."

The expansion at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care is expected to open by spring 2025.
