Four injured after Orland house explosion

State officials said an initial investigation indicates there was a propane leak and explosion.

ORLAND, Maine — Two people were seriously injured in an explosion that caused a fire at a home in Orland on Friday morning.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., crews with the Orland Fire Department responded to a report of a fire and explosion at a single-family home that has a detached garage at 102 Soper Rd.

At the time of the fire, four people were inside the home, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.

One person was taken by LifeFlight to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries considered serious but not life-threatening.

"The three other adults in the home were transported to EMMC by ambulance," Moss said. "One adult suffered serious injuries, the other two suffered minor injuries. The injured were the two homeowners. The other two adults were friends of the homeowners."

The state fire marshal's office responded to the scene to investigate where they interviewed witnesses and processed the scene, the release stated.

Family and neighbors told NEWS CENTER Maine they smelled a propane leak and tried to shut the tank off. The explosion happened shortly after.

"The initial investigation indicates this was a propane leak and explosion," the release said. "Investigators are currently working on determining what was leaking and what the ignition source is."

Officials initially said a family dog named Zeus was missing, but said in an update that Zeus had been found.

According to Moss, the property is a total loss.

Orland fire crews were assisted by fire departments from Penobscot, Castine, Dedham, and Ellsworth.

The investigation remains ongoing.
